Anwar Ibrahim confident Malaysia Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad will hand over top job Former Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim says he is confident Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad will keep his promise of handing over the top job in coming years. Mr Anwar, Dr Mahathir's ally-turned-foe-turned-ally, was released from prison and received a full pardon from the King on Wednesday. While he forgave both Dr Mahathir and former prime minister Najib Razak for putting him in jail, he told the ABC being away from his family was "sickening"."Oh my God. It's certainly tough to see your children grow up without their father, and then now start having grandchildren without their grandpa," he said.

Anwar Ibrahim , the former deputy prime minister of Malaysia , is due to be released from prison on Tuesday, his daughter has said. It is unclear how long Mahathir will remain prime minister after Anwar ’s release .

The announcement is the latest turnaround in an election that has upended Malaysian politics. Mr. Anwar was sentenced to a five- year prison term on a sodomy conviction in 2014 and is nominally scheduled for release in June. The opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim in 2013.

Former Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim — the man who may replace prime minister-elect Mahathir Mohamad — has just been released from prison.

Mr Anwar, who was formerly Dr Mahathir's political rival, has been promised leadership of Malaysia's new governing coalition when Dr Mahathir, 92, decides to step down.

Their newfound alliance is a stunning turnaround from the 1990s when — on the orders of Dr Mahathir and his government — Mr Anwar was arrested and jailed on charges of corruption and sodomy.

Mr Anwar always denied the charges and claimed he was a victim of a political conspiracy.

Mr Anwar, 70, was released from custody at Cheras Rehabilitation Centre in Kuala Lumpur, where he was recovering from a shoulder injury.

More to Come.

Trump to welcome freed Korean-Americans' return to US .
President Donald Trump is promising "quite a scene" when three Korean-Americans detained in North Korea return to the mainland U.S. after more than a year in prison. Despite a middle-of-the-night landing Thursday at the Washington-area Joint Base Andrews, Trump and his wife plan to celebrate in person when the freed men arrive. In anticipation of their arrival, red-carpeted airplane stairs stood by beneath a large American flag hung between a pair of fire engines.
