Bird, who signed a four-year deal with the Broncos last year, missed the pre-season after undergoing off-season shoulder surgery and has been horribly out of form since making his club debut in Round 3 against Wests Tigers.

The 23-year-old hasn’t played since Round 10 against Manly, with Bennett revealing the $3.5 million utility must now go under the knife again to repair his injured sternum.

“I’m hoping his season isn’t over, they are saying if he has the operation it could be six weeks so there’s a possibility he could be back this year,” Bennett told The Courier Mail’s Peter Badel.
