The AFL tribunal’s decision to fine and not suspend Carlton duo Ed and Charlie Curnow has again come under fire, this time with one of the league’s premier players taking aim.

Cats star Patrick Dangerfield, whose teammate Tom Hawkins was rubbed out for a week for the same offence the Curnow brothers escaped with a $1000 fine for, called the decision “farcical”.

“It’s been a couple of years running that Tom’s wore the brunt of the MRP and that’s fair enough with the jumper punch last season, and now the umpire contact this year,”Dangerfield told SEN's Time On.

“And then the following week or following weeks, the same thing has happened and it hasn’t been consistent.

“I think we’re all scratching our heads as to where the consistency is because I’m a little confused as I think the majority of the AFL world is.”

Hawkins can certainly feel hard done by due to not only the Curnow’s escaping with no suspension, but Gold Coast captain Steven May having dodged time off as well.

The AFL’s head of football operations Steve Hocking yesterday announced his decision to appeal the Curnow’s sanctions and Dangerfield praised the move.

According to the 2016 Brownlow Medallist, the AFL needs to get these decisions correct due to the impact it can have on the grassroots level of football.

“The industry made it clear last week that umpire contract is not going to be tolerate and we understand as AFL players that we are role models for the community,” he said.

“What’s accepted at AFL level does seed down to the lower levels.

“So now we’re saying it’s ok to touch umpires because obviously that’s been the ruling of it.”

Hawkins missed the Cats’ 21-point win over Collingwood in Round 8 and is in line to return this week against a struggling Essendon side.
