Former NRL star and now media personality Brett Finch believes Mitchell Pearce is the best halfback in NSW and would thrive during State of Origin if selected.

Many names have been chucked around for potential Blues halves pairings, but the incumbent number seven has hardly been mentioned at all.

Pearce has played 18 matches for NSW since 2008, however, the only series Queensland hasn't been victorious in since Pearce's debut was 2014 when then Canterbury Bulldogs halves pairing of Trent Hodkinson and Josh Reynolds ran the show.

The current Newcastle halfback often copped all sorts of criticism for his performances when he wore the Blues jersey, and it is expected that NSW coach Brad Fittler looks elsewhere.

Ponga enters Maroons Origin consideration

Ponga enters Maroons Origin consideration Newcastle fullback Kalyn Ponga has entered Queensland State of Origin contention after starring in Saturday's 15-10 NRL win over Brisbane. Boom fullback Kalyn Ponga says he is ready for the cauldron of State of Origin football with the Newcastle fullback increasingly being spoken about as a Queensland debutant this year. The 20-year-old starred in the Knights' 15-10 NRL win over Brisbane on Saturday, with Mitchell Pearce describing his teammate as the most gifted young footballer he's ever seen.

But Finch, who played three matches for the Blues between 2004 and 2006, thinks Pearce would prove the doubters wrong.

"In my opinion, he's (Pearce) still the best halfback in NSW," Finch told reporters on Tuesday.

"I don't want to put any pressure on Pearcey, he's up there doing great stuff in Newcastle.

"I'm sure he'd love to play for NSW if he got the opportunity.

"What he's done in Newcastle's been impressive, but there's (also) plenty of good young players coming through.

"Mitchell Moses, Luke Brooks, Luke Keary, Blake Green, there's plenty of options.

"The old fox out at Penrith - Jimmy (Maloney) - he's going pretty good.

"He's a hell of a competitor Mitchell (Pearce). The reason why we lost those games wasn't Mitchell's fault, it was a team effort.

"He's had to cop the brunt of the blame which is extremely unfair, but it's made him a better person.

"Mitchell's main priority is to win the premiership with Newcastle"

Fittler took over from Laurie Daley after the latter spent five years in the role since 2013.

'Freddy' is a NSW legend who played 31 games for the Blues and captained them in 17, which is still the most matches in charge of the Blues ever.

Finch is confident Freddy will get the most out of his squad.

"Freddy looks like he's relaxed, he was my captain for three years, there's no greater competitor," Finch said.

"There's no greater winner, he's won at everything he's set his mind to.

"He's very determined, and he's got a plan here for NSW.

"I think he's going to be fantastic. He's got that fun side to him, but when it's time to train or to play, he expects quality and he expects your best."
