Former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett has returned as Hawthorn president after Richard Garvey suddenly resigned from the role at the AFL club. Kennett had an eventful term as Hawks president from 2006-11.

The 69-year-old believes we need to develop a deeper understanding of the women's game, and he is currently content to sit back and watch how the present season unfolds.

This comes a week after the AFL sent a memo around to all AFLW coaches asking them to change their tactics to avoid congestion.

Hawthorn has a team in the VFLW, and Kennett listed the continual injuries in the AFLW as a major reason as to why he is happy for the game to progress before Hawthorn enter.

“I think we all need to learn about the game, how it is conducted and how we play it. I want it to succeed and grow, for the players and supporters.

“If we can reduce the injuries, I will feel like I have discharged my responsibilities as president of the club a lot better than otherwise."

The AFLW currently has eight clubs participating - Carlton, Western Bulldogs, Melbourne, Brisbane Lions, Fremantle, Collingwood, GWS and Adelaide.

Geelong and North Melbourne will join the competition in 2019, with Richmond, St Kilda, West Coast and Gold Coast to join the season after.

In round 2 of the season last week, both Brianna Davey and Isabel Huntington suffered season-ending ACL injuries.
