No talk of boycott at Margaret Court Arena

No talk of boycott at Margaret Court Arena Nick Kyrgios says he will try to "block out" Margaret Court's views on sexuality if he plays on her namesake court at the Australian Open. Margaret Court's controversial views remain a talking point at Melbourne Park but leading players have shied away from suggestions of a boycott at her namesake arena.Tennis trailblazer Billie Jean King on Friday used the occasion of being named Australian Open woman of the year to call for the renaming of Margaret Court Arena.

The furore led to suggestions that some players would boycott the Margaret Court Arena at this month's opening Grand Slam unless the flagship stadium at Melbourne Park was renamed. "As a former champion Margaret was invited to the Australian Open .

The comments have led to many tennis professionals, including Australia 's Sam Stosur propose that the Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne — originally called Show Court One when it opened in 1988 — undergo a name change or have the Australian Open organisers risk a player boycott .

Margaret Court is a great Australian tennis champion and skipping this year’s Australian Open.

The politics of same-sex marriage swirl around 2018’s first Grand Slam.

It’s been a rocky year for Margaret Court and her religious beliefs. The question for 2018 is whether this year will be particularly bad for her legacy.

The former tennis champion, who has more Grand Slam titles than any other athlete, has taken aim for years at same-sex marriage and homosexuality in general.

Last year she saw her Australia embrace the idea of two men marrying one another.

Even though she overwhelmingly lost the vote in Australia — 62% to 38% — according to legendary tennis commentator Mary Carrillo, Court still thinks she’s in the majority.

'I suggest Billie Jean check her facts': Barry Court defends wife

'I suggest Billie Jean check her facts': Barry Court defends wife The husband of Margaret Court has defended his wife against comments made by US tennis legend Billie Jean King on Saturday, echoing calls to rename Margaret Court Arena because of her controversial comments on same-sex marriage. Margaret Court, a fierce opponent of same-sex marriage, has received backlash over a number of her comments.Last year she announced she would boycott Qantas, following chief executive Alan Joyce's support for same-sex marriage. In an interview on Vision Christian Radio last year, she said transgender tendencies in children were "all the devil".

Margaret Court boycotts Qantas because it supports gay marriage. In a letter published in The West Australian newspaper, in her home town of Perth, Court wrote: “I am disappointed that Qantas has become an active promoter for same-sex marriage.

ONE of Australia ’s biggest music promoters has added his voice to calls for Margaret Court Arena to be renamed in the wake of her Qantas boycott .

“She fears for what she calls a genderless society,” Carrillo told Outsports via phone. Carrillo recently spent some time in Perth with Court and was with her the day the vote totals were announced. “She fears for fatherless generations. And she said she still considers she is the silent majority.”

Last week Court said publicly that she would not be attending the Australian Open, where she won the ladies singles title 11 times, more than any other player. (Incidentally she lost only one final ever, to Billie Jean King in 1968.)

Over the last year, as Court’s anti-gay rhetoric has escalated, some have called for athletes to boycott Margaret Court Arena, which houses the showcase court of the Australian Open.

Yet to date, no player has made any indication of boycotting anything.

Anthony Mundine confident he will beat Tommy Browne

Anthony Mundine confident he will beat Tommy Browne Anthony Mundine says he will retire from professional boxing this year should he lose on Wednesday night to Tommy Browne. Mundine thought his fight against Green last year would be his last as he battled a hip injury that hindered his movement."I thought the Green fight was probably going to be my last, but that's why I want to give this one more year of fighting because I feel that good," said Mundine."I don't want to look back in 10 years time and say f**k, why didn't I fight on when I had a healthy hip.""I was impaired for the better part of 10 years.

The furore led to suggestions that some players would boycott the Margaret Court Arena at this month's opening Grand Slam unless the flagship stadium at Melbourne Park was renamed. "As a former champion Margaret was invited to the Australian Open .

Andy Murray has slammed Australian tennis legend-turned Christian pastor Margaret Court 's 'offensive' views on gay marriage, warning players that a boycott of her arena would cause scheduling chaos.

“I speak to the players every day but there have been no requests,” said tournament director Craig Tiley.

Court had some choice words about the idea of players boycotting her arena.

“I think that is petty if they do that and it says what’s in their heart,” she said. “I think that’s very childish, but that’s not up to me and it doesn’t affect me.”

It’s hard to believe an athlete would actually refuse to play a match assigned to Margaret Court Arena. It would be a bold move, but the biggest loser in the ordeal might be the athlete, not Court herself.

The better question is what kind of boycott fans could mount. Will enough fans avoid the arena to have any kind of impact? Will there be major protests outside the arena?

Because Australian voters so overwhelmingly rejected Court’s bigotry, it’s a lot easier to dismiss her as a grumpy old gramma.

My guess is if the country had voted to oppose same-sex marriage, there would be hell to pay and Court would pay dearly. Yet because Australian voters so overwhelmingly rejected Court’s bigotry, it’s a lot easier to dismiss her as a grumpy old gramma.

But the Australian Open has just begun, so time will tell.
