Former NRL player Paul Carter has signed a one-year contract with bush footy side Cessnock Goannas.

The Goannas compete in the Newcastle Rugby League competiton and is the junior club of Knights premiership winners Andrew and Matthew Johns.

Carter, who was sacked from Gold Coast, South Sydney and the Sydney Roosters, recently plead guilty to drug supply to former teammate Shaun Kenny-Dowall and is awaiting his sentence on November 29.

Roosters players have been banned from making contact with the troubled NRL player after his most recent incident where he reportedly called police to Blake Ferguson's house telling them he had drugged his children.
