Israel Folau's stunning year has been recognised with a nomination for World Rugby's Men's Player of the Year award - a gong no Australian has ever won before.

After taking out his third John Eales Medal last month, Folau is one of five nominees that could be crowned world rugby's best male player at an awards evening next Sunday in Monte Carlo.

All Blacks five-eighth Beauden Barrett and winger Rieko Ioane have been nominated, as have England's second-rower Maro Itoje and playmaker Owen Farrell.

Folau has arguably had his best year of international rugby to date, having crossed the line for 12 tries in 10 appearances.

Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje have been nominated for World Rugby Player of the Year after their impeccable form for both England and the Alongside the two Saracens stars are All Blacks Reiko Ioane and Beauden Barrett, while Australia' s full-back Israel Folau completes the five- man shortlist.

He was in line to potentially break the world record mark of 17 tries in a calendar year but won't get a chance to do so after being given the last four Tests of the year off, meaning he won't be there in Monaco to accept the award if he were to win.

Folau has never been nominated for the award before, with Michael Hooper and David Pocock (2015) the last Australian players to be in the running.

Barrett has been New Zealand's go-to man for most of the year and played strongly against Australia, while Ioane has also found a knack of finding the paint, with eight tries in nine games this year.

Meanwhile, the Wallaroos did not receive any recognition with Kelly Brazier (New Zealand), Romane Menager (France), Safi N'Diaye (France), Lydia Thompson (England) and Portia Woodman (New Zealand) named as contenders for the women's category.

World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont said: "There have been numerous highlights from a fascinating year of international rugby that comprised an outstanding Women's Rugby World Cup, a compelling British and Irish Lions tour, Six Nations and The Rugby Championship competitions and a superb programme of Test rugby.

"I am sure there will be lots of debate over the coming weeks. I'd like to thank the panel for their expert consideration and look forward to the winners being announced at the World Rugby Awards in Monaco."
