Georges St-Pierre made a victorious return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, ending his four-year exile from mixed martial arts by winning the organization’s middleweight title with a dramatic submission victory over Michael Bisping.

Many had wondered whether the Canadian could resume his prior dominance after such a long layoff, especially with moving up to middleweight from his more natural division of welterweight.

No problem.

The decisive moment of an entertaining and hard-fought contest came towards the end of the third round, when St-Pierre popped Bisping with a stout left hand and sent him to the canvas.

UFC superstar Georges St - Pierre has vacated the middleweight title . The Canadian dramatically returned to the octagon after a four-year hiatus at UFC 217 in New York and submitted Michael Bisping to capture the undisputed UFC middleweight championship of the world.

Bisping tried to fight him off on the floor but could not get himself out of trouble. St-Pierre eventually got his back and locked in a read naked choke and the fight was ended by the referee after Bisping refused to tap and fell unconscious.

“This is my dream come true, guys,” St-Pierre, widely regarded as the best fighter in UFC history, said, after receiving a rapturous reception following his long layoff.

There were times when St-Pierre looked a little gassed but there is also a reason why he has now recorded 13 consecutive wins. The Canadian claimed in the build-up that he would come back better than ever, and perhaps he has. He worked extensively with famed boxing coach Freddie Roach ahead of the fight and it was his boxing that got the job done, that powerful left hand setting up the finish that followed.

UFC 218: Title opponent for Robert Whittaker all but confirmed after Georges St-Pierre defeats Michael Bisping

UFC 218: Title opponent for Robert Whittaker all but confirmed after Georges St-Pierre defeats Michael Bisping Interim UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker will almost certainly fight UFC legend Georges St-Pierre in 2018 to unify the belts after a comprehensive victory for the Canadian on Sunday against England's Michael Bisping.Despite it being some four years since St-Pierre, who is widely considered one of the greatest UFC fighters ever, if not the greatest, had stepped inside the octagon, he showed no signs of rust through a fairly even first two rounds before choking out Bisping in the final minute of the third round, as the Australian applauded at ringside.

“You’ve got to give it up to Georges,” Bisping said. “He was the better man. No excuses.”

There is now some intrigue as to what happens next. Robert Whittaker is the interim champ at middleweight and the UFC has interest in pairing him with St-Pierre to unify the title at a pay-per-view in Whittaker’s native Australia in early 2018.

However, St-Pierre could opt to move down to 170 lbs., where a fight against Conor McGregor — who has fought twice at that weight — would be a blockbuster.

For now though, St-Pierre was just glad to be back, to be winning again, and to be straight back to the top of the UFC pile.
