AFL premiership winning star Heritier Lumumba has slammed his former team Collingwood, over their failure to deal with alleged racism at the club.

Lumumba spoke frankly about his time at the Magpies in a recent documentary, saying he was nicknamed “chimp”, and claiming the AFL “is incompetent in dealing with and addressing” the issue.

In an interview on The Project, Lumumba appeared to fight back tears as he spoke of racists taunts being repeated over the years.

“I went through dealing with racism that’s ingrained in society. Some of the things I experienced were unfortunate and damaging,” he said.

“You can imagine going into your workplace, and every day you’re being reminded of your oppression. Over time it had a compounding effect. If I was to say some of the jokes you would be appalled.”

The All-Australian player also had harsh words for Collingwood president Eddie McGuire, following McGuire’s 2013 racist remarks towards Sydney player Adam Goodes, after Lumumba took a stand on Twitter at the time.

“All of a sudden I was receiving a call from Eddie, and he said ‘why didn’t you contact me?’ I said ‘if you don’t understand why I would be offended with this and why I would separate myself from this, why I would refuse to stay silent, then there’s an issue here’.”

Lumumba said the club should have taken decisive action over the issue, but instead chose to sit on their hands.

“They were inactive, they didn’t make any statement, and for me that spoke volumes for their ignorance, their incompetence, their fear.”
