The decision by Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett to cut Broncos legend Sam Thaiday loose at the end of next season has been slammed by Today show host Karl Stefanovic as "disgusting."

Bennett has said that he is keen for Thaiday to remain involved in the Broncos in some capacity but he won't be playing for the club if he wants to continue his NRL career past 2018.

It continues a tough run for Thaiday after he was dumped from the Queensland State of Origin team following their embarrassing loss to NSW in game one at Suncorp Stadium.

"I like Wayne Bennett but I tell you what, Sam Thaiday, treating him like that, I think it's disgusting," Stefanovic said.

Thaiday, 32, is fourth on the Broncos' list for all-time appearances and has started off the bench at times this season with Bennett looking for more impact.

He has not indicated if he wants to retire when his current deal expires but faces playing for another club or heading to England if he wants to continue.

"Next year will be the end for Sam with us," Bennett told News Corp.

"He knows that.

"Sam has a long-term future at the Broncos beyond football and I still want him to be part of the club in some way.

"It's up to him if he wants to retire next year, but I just know we won't be re-signing Sam and I've told him that."
