Students with qualifications from TAFE in South Australia may be forced to undergo reassessment after an audit found 14 training courses to be substandard.

A report by the Australian Skills Quality Authority found irregularities with 14 of the 16 courses it reviewed and SA's Higher Education Minister Susan Close says an independent review is needed to restore confidence in TAFE.

"There is justifiably enormous public concern about how TAFE is functioning," Ms Close said on Tuesday.

"Very clearly what has gone wrong is the operation of the organisation has not been good enough."

The 14 courses impact around 800 students and include meat processing, hairdressing and plumbing.

It is not clear if students will now face further study and reassessments to become properly accredited.
