The fan who shot the footage called the incident "absolutely inexcusable behaviour".

Louise, another audience member, said Newcombe had been attempting to tell a story about his late friend Anthony Bourdain early into the gig, and got peeved by hollering from the crowd.

"He just unloaded on people about it, saying you're a bunch of dickheads and baboons and that's why you've got lockout laws in Sydney... The rest of the band looked completely mortified," she said.

"There were some awful people in the crowd – young guys, don't know if they were drunk or just obnoxious – but I don't think any of that excuses Anton. Lots of people get upset, but their mind doesn't go there."

She said she walked out of the show following Newcombe's rape comment, and noticed groups of other women leaving at the same time.

Rocker slammed over ‘disgusting’ rape joke at Sydney show. WHILE famous for his wild on stage antics, Anton Newcombe from The Brian Jonestown Massacre horrified fans at their Sydney concert with this outburst. Absolutely inexcusable behaviour.

"I don't go to gigs for rape-based slurs... Statistically, it's very likely there are people in that audience who are rape victims. You just can't say things like that," she said.

Newcombe, who formed the band in the early 1990s, has long drawn controversy with his onstage exploits, which were infamously captured in the hit 2004 documentary DIG!, in which he's seen kicking a heckling audience member in the head.

Speaking to the Herald ahead of the current tour, Newcombe said such antics were in his past.

"Our concerts are gonna be good, and it has nothing to do with if somebody wants to see if I'm going to lose my shit, like DIG! or some bullshit."

TheBrian Jonestown Massacre's Australian tour continues with a string of sold-out gigs in Canberra, Castlemaine and Melbourne this week.

Touring company Principal Entertainment has been approached for comment.
