Jones' 2GB show had a 2.2 per cent increase, to extend his lead in breakfast radio to a 15.5 per cent audience share.

The result sees the 2GB host claiming his biggest share in the slot since September 2016, when he had a 16.2 per cent audience share.

Adam Lang, chief operating officer of Macquarie Media, called the result a solid start for the AM veteran.

"He had a remarkable year last year with health challenges, and this is significantly up on the same time last year," he said, attributing the bounce to "some minor tweaks" on the show.

Jones would be on shortlist if Cheika quits after 2019 England coach Eddie Jones would be on any shortlist for the Wallabies job if Michael Cheika fails to win the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, according to Rugby Australia's (RA) high performance manager. Cheika, who guided the Wallabies to the 2015 World Cup final, has already said he would walk away from the role if they do not go one better and win the Webb Ellis trophy in Yokohama next November. While RA have not started preparing for that possibility yet, high performance manager Ben Whitaker said Jones, who coached the Wallabies from 2001-05, would be on any list he was instructed to draw up as a contingency.

The FM leaders also fell behind ABC Sydney's Wendy Harmer and Robbie Buck, whose show rose 0.9 points to a 10.3 per cent audience share.

The first survey of the year promised significant interest, following major upheaval in the radio landscape at the end of 2017.

KIIS FM saw their drive show – hosted by newcomers Will McMahon and Woody Whitelaw – drop 1.7 points to a 9.1 per cent share, following the defection of last year's leaders Hughesy and Kate to 2DayFM. Despite the drop, the new pair were still the third most listened to show in the drive slot.

Hughesy and Kate, meanwhile, didn't seem to take their audience with them: the duo's 2DayFM debut saw the station suffer a 0.3 per cent drop in the slot, previously hosted by Hamish & Andy, meandering at a 5.2 per cent share.

The drive slot was instead claimed by Nova's Kate, Tim and Marty, with 10.5 per cent of the audience.

"We don't see that as any concern," ARN national content director Duncan Campbell said of KIIS's Sydney dips.

"The audience numbers are still very high. Breakfast is the key indicator of the strength of any radio station, and being in double figures is always where we want the Kyle and Jackie O show."

He also defended the station's decision to let Kate Langbroek and Dave Hughes walk when they were topping the slot as "a move to futureproof the business", and praised Will and Woody for their "energy and creative approach".

"We knew that the strategy would take some time to build," he said. "To be holding at #3 is a good result for those guys considering what the station's done."

In other significant results, Em Rusciano's refreshed breakfast show on 2DayFM, with new co-hosts Ed Kavalee and Grant Denyer, jumped 0.6 per cent to bump their audience share to 3.4 per cent, a promising start following a disastrous 2017.

Triple J also saw bounces across the board, with their morning show hosted by Linda Marigliano earning the survey's highest jump, a 2.9 per cent increase in audience share.
