And, as a self-confessed Christmas tragic, he's probably one of the most suitable people to host Carols in the Domain

"It's one of the highlights, it's such an important part of Christmas for us all and I think the whole event reminds us of the Christmas spirit we should be getting into," Koch said.

"We're all so grumpy these days, everyone's under pressure and everyone is sort of centred on themselves as an individual, we seem to be doing more and more of that. Something about the Carols gives us a bit of a jolt to say 'hey, there are a lot more important things in life' and that's family and friends."

11 Ways to Get Into the Holiday Spirit . “Instead of being a time of unusual behavior, Christmas is perhaps the only time in the year when people can obey their natural impulses and express their true sentiments without feeling self-conscious and, perhaps, foolish.

David Koch reveals his wacky Christmas traditions as he gets set to host Carols in the Domain. That is what the Christmas spirit is all about — thinking of others.

"They sort of don't quite know what I do and it is funny when they get to an age, when they get to six or eight they start to figure it out, but before then they look at me and go 'Poppy what are you doing here?' Because Nickelodeon and The Wiggles and stuff like that is way more important than Sunrise," he said.

The line-up for Carols includes perennial favourites The Wiggles, together with singers Dami Im, Samantha Jade, Justine Clarke and the cast from stage shows The Wizard of Oz and Jersey Boys.

For Koch, there's an overall message he hopes people take away from the event.

"We get so caught up in ourselves but all the studies show that actually helping people and volunteering makes you happier," he said.

"You look at all the social studies that are done that we cover all during the year in terms of stability, of families, of bringing up kids and it's all based on really traditional fundamental foundations like giving and volunteering and what the spirit of Christmas is all about. I think Carols sums it up."

*The 35th annual Carols in the Domain will air on the Seven Network at 8pm (AEDT) on Sunday December 17.
