Ms Ardler disappeared without a trace in 2012 and the matter was treated as a missing persons case until May this year when forensic testing proved that human bones found by a teenage boy in bushland near Cranebrooke, in Sydney's north-west, belonged to her.

Homicide boss Detective Superintendent Scott Cook told Fairfax Media on Wednesday that discovering Ms Ardler's bones was a "major breakthrough" in a case that had stumped investigators so far.

Police also announced a $750,000 reward in the hope that someone would be able to shed light on Ms Ardler's death.

"Anyone who might know who the offender is, and I suspect the people who live around that area may know more, should come forward. You owe it to Cheryl to come forward," Superintendent Cook said.

"I really appeal to people's goodwill here. You absolutely owe it to that citizen to come forward. I really implore those people, whoever knows anything, to contact Crime Stoppers.

"We're particular interested in Cheryl's close associates and hearing from members of the community who resided in that area in 2012 and 2013," he added.

The discovery of Ms Ardler's bones has allowed police to investigate Ms Ardler's disappearance as a murder, rather than a missing person, investigation.

The investigation is focused on one individual, Superintendent Cook said.
