Today he faced a sentence hearing in the Land & Environment Court which was told he had already been fined hundreds of thousands of dollars for dumping waste across in Picnic Point.

Most recently he was handed a record $225,000 penalty for unloading 80 tonnes of asbestos-riddled material at Picnic Point in a crime caught on camera.

The EPA’s barrister Kristine Stern SC today noted the “failure of any of the sentences placed thus far to effect the goal of deterrence.”

“There is a need for the court to hold Mr Hanna accountable” she said.

Hanna’s barrister conceded jail was the only option but asked for a sentence that wasn’t crushing, noting his family was suffering financially as a result of his conduct.

It is the first time the Land & Environment Court has been asked to consider jailing a “repeat waste offender” under legislation introduced in 2014.

Hanna is facing a maximum of two years when he is sentenced later this month.

He did not answer questions as he left court a free man for now.
