Tighter controls on takeaway alcohol were imposed in the remote community two weeks ago in response to weeks of alcohol-fuelled crime and the alleged rape of a toddler.

"I have been extremely disturbed at the significant events that have taken place in Tennant Creek over the past few weeks," Attorney-General Natasha Fyles said.

"This is not a decision I have taken lightly, but grog, the alcohol-fuelled harm that we've seen … is unacceptable.

"As a government, we will not tolerate it."

Under the restrictions, extended by the NT Liquor Commission, takeaway purchases will continue to be limited to three hours of the day and prohibited on Sundays.
