Police in Newcastle raid an inner-city unit where medicinal cannabis was being grown, seizing hundreds of plants .

Almost 12,000 cannabis plants have been seized during raids at three sophisticated hydroponic grow houses around southeast Queensland, in an operation in which about $60 million worth of the drug has been confiscated.

In extensive greenhouses dotted around Esk, small seedlings to mature plants were discovered during Wednesday's searches, as well as a large amount of drying cannabis, police said.

"The location and seizure of this cannabis is very significant and will have a major impact on the availability of it in the Brisbane and southeast Queensland drug markets," the drug squad's Detective Superintendent Jon Wacker said.

Three men, aged 24, 26 and 34, have been charged with producing dangerous drugs, with two due to appear at Ipswich Magistrates Court on January 10.

POLICE have set fire to a multi-million dollar mound of marijuana in southeast Queensland after seizing almost 12 , 000 cannabis plants in a series of raids near Esk, northwest of Brisbane.

The raids were conducted as part of an ongoing investigation in which 87 kilograms of cannabis have been located, resulting in seven people facing 10 charges.

"The estimated value of cannabis seized throughout this operation to date stands at approximately $60 million," Det Supt Wacker said.

Meanwhile, Whitsunday detectives have charged 37 people with 120 drug offences after a six-month sting.

That had led to a substantial quantity of drugs including cannabis, MDMA, LSD and cocaine being seized, Detective Sergeant Chris Caswell said.

"This operation will put a significant dent in the drug trade in our community and we will continue to target these high-level networks to make our community safer," he said.
