It’s been exactly one year since Ben Debono’s wife Leah lost her life to melanoma.

For most of us it would be tempting to wish the day away and not acknowledge an anniversary that causes so much pain. But since Leah’s death Ben has instead been celebrating his wife’s life, travelling all over Australia to warn others of the dangers of skin cancer… hoping they can from Leah’s misdiagnosis.

“I just thought that when I first lost Leah I wouldn't make it to one year. I really thought that on my trip, something is going to happen” Ben has told A Current Affair, adding: “I can't see me lasting that long without her looking after me.”

Strains of "I Was The One" rang out along the platforms of Sydney's Central railway terminal as jumpsuited, coiffed and guitar-wielding passengers boarded the "Elvis Express" and "Blue Suede Express" bound for the country town of Parkes, some 357 km (222 miles) westward.

Until yesterday he was in Perth, but Ben hopped on a plane with his trusty kelpie Turbo and headed to Sydney, the city where Leah died.

“I want to go to the hospital and walk through the ward that Leah was in - I don't know why I just feel like I need to see certain places, revisit where we were for the last time.”

Some of the fondest memories Ben has of his late wife are the countless gigs they attended together, travelling the world to experience music festivals… making memories to music.

Leah’s favourite band was Foster The People and for Ben it felt like fate when he discovered they’d be performing in Sydney on the anniversary of her death. He knew he had to be there.

“Too many things lined up for us not to go and she would’ve wanted us to go and it's a good way to celebrate her life.”

Ben had purchased tickets off his own bat, but Foster The People heard about their biggest fan and invited Ben along to their soundcheck before the gig… and gave Ben a private concert.

Ben is taking a brief hiatus from his lap of the map, but he and Turbo will be hitting the road again in a few weeks… heading back to Perth, cutting through the country to Uluru then heading up the Top End for winter.

Ben’s not putting a time limit on this trip. It was originally meant to be their honeymoon, and even though she’s not physically by his side, Ben feels her presence everyday.

“I feel like I am not Ben who lost his wife. I am Ben who was lucky enough to meet and marry the love of his life.”

“Being on the road and being around beautiful new sceneries and meeting new people like the places I have been around Australia - it's hard not to be happy … Plus everyone's always happy to by me a beer every now and then so that always helps.”
