It's time to talk about the sweet stuff — yep, sugar! Sure, you've heard it all before, "Sugar makes you fat!" "Sugar is the devil" but knowing the actual reasons why is the best way to understand why sugar — despite it's addictive taste — isn't good for you.

We spoke to Nik Toth, creator of the Lean Body Formula and the convo started a little like this, "I'm not in the habit of lying to people, I am going to come right out and say it. Sugar is unnecessary," admits Nik, honestly.

Looking at history and human physiology it's pretty clear we evolved without eating sugar on the reg. Back in the good ol' caveman days, sugar was consumed in the form of seasonal fruit and honey. Nowadays sugar is present in almost everything we eat and drink. According to Nik, while there are different types of sugar in food, fructose (the naughty one) has the biggest impact on our waistlines and health because our bodies can't metabolise it well — it goes straight to the liver, which immediately stores it as body fat. "From there it contributes to obesity, abnormal lipid profiles and chronic illnesses such as diabetes," says Nik. "Over time it wears out our insulin stores — it is highly addictive, it damages our arteries and raises cholesterol."

According to Nik, this is how it works: When you eat sugar, first your blood sugar levels rise. Then your pancreas has to dump insulin into the blood supply to bring the sugar levels back to normal so that the high blood sugar levels don’t cause havoc on your entire system. Once this happens, you experience the "crash", which often leaves you craving more carbs because your blood sugar levels just lowered.
